Choosing an IT outsourcing partner in the UAE is a decision most businesses only get to make carefully once — the second time is usually a costly correction after the first partner didn't work out. Here is the checklist we'd want a client to run against us, and against anyone else they're evaluating.
NDA Readiness and IP Protection
A partner should have a standing NDA ready to sign before any real project detail is discussed — not one they need a week to draft once you ask. More importantly, check the contract explicitly assigns IP ownership of all code, designs, and documentation to you on payment, not to the vendor by default. This single clause is the most common source of disputes after a project ends, and it is worth reading closely rather than assuming it's standard boilerplate.
Communication Standards You Can Verify Before Signing
Ask what your actual point of contact will be during the project — a dedicated project manager and technical lead, or a rotating queue of whoever is free. Ask what the guaranteed response time is for questions or issues, in writing, not "we're usually quick." A partner that commits to a specific response window (DIGIT guarantees 24 hours) gives you something to hold them to; a vague promise gives you nothing when a deadline slips.
Technical Depth Beyond the Sales Pitch
A sales call can make any team sound capable. Ask instead for: the CVs or LinkedIn profiles of the specific engineers who'd work on your project (not the company's most senior hires used for every pitch), a technical walkthrough of a past project similar in scope to yours, and how they'd approach a specific technical problem from your project — a partner with real depth will engage with the detail; one without it will redirect to generic capability slides.
Security Standards for UAE Compliance Requirements
If your business handles customer data, financial data, or operates in a regulated sector, ask what security standards the partner builds to — encryption at rest and in transit, role-based access control, audit logging — and whether they've worked with UAE data residency or sector-specific compliance requirements before. A partner that has to think about this for the first time on your project is a partner still learning at your expense.
Portfolio Depth and Reference Clients You Can Actually Call
A portfolio page is easy to build. What's harder to fake is a reference client willing to take your call and describe what the engagement was actually like — including what went wrong and how it was handled. Ask for at least one reference in a project of comparable size and complexity to yours, not just the partner's flagship case study.
Cultural and Timezone Fit for UAE Working Hours
UAE businesses run a Sunday–Thursday work week with hours that don't always overlap cleanly with partners on a Saturday–Sunday weekend. Ask directly how the partner structures overlap hours for meetings and urgent issues, and whether their delivery team has direct experience working with UAE or GCC clients — the friction of a mismatched work week and unfamiliar business norms adds up over a multi-month engagement even when the technical work is solid.
How Contract Structure Affects Your Risk
Fixed-price contracts without a documented change-request process are a common source of disputes once real requirements surface mid-project — check how scope changes are priced and approved before you sign, not after the first change comes up. Time-and-materials contracts shift that risk the other way, so ask how the partner reports hours and progress so you're not left guessing where the budget went.
Red Flags Worth Walking Away From
- A quote dramatically below every other vendor with no explanation of what's different in scope or team seniority.
- No written IP assignment clause, or vague language about "collaborative ownership" of the code.
- Reluctance to put you in direct contact with the engineers doing the work, only a sales or account manager.
- No clear process for post-delivery bug fixes or a warranty period.
- Case studies with no client names, logos, or verifiable references at all.
